ALEX VENTLING TRIO

Composition, improvisation and expression fall together in this piano-trio format with a personal signature of warmth and inventiveness. The band began as Alex's Master project at the Jazzcampus Basel, and is now currently active in Switzerland. In February 2020 they completed their first international tour in New Zealand – a musical rediscovery of Alex's heritage with 10 concerts spanning the country.

The Trio showcases Alex’s compositions, which audiences have described as strikingly original, yet accessible. Influenced by a diverse listening palette of jazz and classical music, the harmonic and rhythmic contours flow with sensibility and weight. A strong sense of melody is always present, sustaining accessibility but also avoiding predictability. Alex aims to use the compositional process to continuously free himself from his perception’s boundaries and own musical horizon.

James Krüttli and Phelan Burgoyne complete the Trio, the three sharing years of camaraderie before the band was created. With like-minded and ‘like-listened’ musicians that go beyond only the band-stand, a much different musical rapport of fluidity, trust and playfulness can unfold seamlessly and effortlessly. A dance of musical discussion, curiosity and discoveries is conjured in their performances.
