ALEX & The Wavemakers

Alex Ventling (nz/ch) – piano, compositions

Song Yi Jeon (ko) - voice, effects

James Krüttli (ch) – electric bass

Dominik Fürstberger (de) – drums

Song Yi’s voice flies with purity and ease, James and Dominik ground with natural authority, and Alex leads in the midst of the wave with his warm keystroke. Alex & The Wavemakers, as the name suggests, is a quartet that emits sonic momentum with intricate rhythmic textures. Compositions live from the careful synchronisation of each voice, generating a transforming groove-organism. Above this impetus, float sensitive hymnic melodies – a sometimes intriguing mixture of fragility and power. With no specific style restrictions, the music could hint at traditions of groove, hymns, alternative rock, and of course jazz, in the wide sense of adventure and exploration.

The band was originally formed in 2017 and has since released their first EP in 2018. Photographs and video were taken by Alex, in an abstract series capturing macro movements of light on the river Rhine by night. The band plan to film their first Live-Video in 2020 using projections of this footage, in a surreal mix of sound and visuals.

“Alex Ventling is a very talented piano player with great musicality and a voice of his own. With his Wavemakers, he creates evocative landscapes that unexpectedly shift between delicate melodies and powerful grooves.” – COLIN VALLON
